Standard First Aid is the most commonly required training course in the workplace. In addition to CPR & AED training, this course offers valuable information and skills to the first aider so that he/she will be effective until EMS arrives.

Course Outline:

    • Legal requirements for workplace first aiders Acts and Regulations in Alberta
    • The need for and importance of CPR
    • S T O P Sign of Life TM (Primary Assessment)
    • CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)
    • Partial & Complete Airway Obstructions / Airway emergencies (choking)
    • AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
    • Special considerations (CPR & AED)
    • Recovery position
    • Basic structure and function of the airway / respiratory system
    • Basic structure and function of the circulatory system
    • Signs & symptoms and first aid for angina / heart attack and TIA / stroke
    • Risk factors of cardiovascular disease
    • Severe external bleeding
    • Amputations and care for amputated tissue
    • Internal bleeding / Shock Unconsciousness / Fainting
    • Principles of secondary assessment using SAMPLE, vital signs & head-to-toe exam
    • Drowning, Hyperventilation, Asthma, Anaphylactic Reaction, Inhalation and Chest Injuries
    • Head, spine and pelvic injuries (including rollovers, immobilization)
    • Closed and open wounds
    • Scalp / ear / eye / mouth / nose injuries
    • Thermal injuries & chemical / electrical injuries (burns)
    • Poisons, bites and stings
    • Bone and joint injuries of upper and lower extremities
    • First aid kits – contents incl. barrier devices
    • Cold emergencies (hypothermia, frost nip and frostbite)
    • Heat emergencies
    • Diabetic emergencies
    • Seizures (convulsions)
    • Emergency childbirth

Course materials are provided. Students will receive certificate upon successful completion of both written exam and practical exam.
