2014 Award Recipients
Announcing the Peter Mehl 2014 Scholarship Winners
The AJFWA Peter Mehl Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to applicants who excel at the following criteria:
- Accepted by a post-secondary institution in a faculty or program appropriate for entering a career in natural resource management or outdoor related fields
- Have a strong academic record
- Record of commitment to a not for profit youth program
There were two $500 Scholarships available this year with an outstanding field of seven applicants.
Congratulations to our two winners: Anne Neumann and Conrad Taylor.
Anne Neumann from Cold Lake has been involved in JFW for 11 years. The AJFWA Peter Mehl Scholarship will help Anne follow her passion for the environment and the outdoors. “I want to make a difference in how the world is treated and how the environment can be use both efficiently and responsibly for everyone.” She is beginning her first year in the Bachelor of Environmental Science Program at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
To say Anne has been committed and involved in JFW over the years is an understatement. As a Warden and a Leader she has done it all: Club Leader, community organizer and volunteer, winner of the Silver Honour, JFW trips to Japan, Costa Rica and Newfoundland, and years on the AC Conference Committee, Outreaches, and Junior Forest Rangers.
Conrad joined JFW in 2005 in Calgary. He excelled as a Warden, going on to become a Club Leader, and is now an Alumni member. Conrad is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Program in Natural Resource Management, at the University of Northern British Columbia.
This has been an award winning year for Conrad. He was our first ever winner of the Peter Mehl Scholarship this spring, was presented with the Silver Honour at National Camp, and now again is one of the 2014 Peter Mehl Scholarship recipients.
Conrad credits “each and every person who has devoted the time and love into the Junior Forest Wardens that has allowed me to grow and pursue becoming who I am today. I couldn't have done it without the support of my peers, leaders and family. The Junior Forest Wardens is an organization that will always be a part of me and I couldn't be more proud of it. I hope I can inspire the next generation the way I have been inspired by so many. Thank you again for helping me achieve my educational and life goals.”
The Peter Mehl Memorial Scholarship is available to all students across Canada who are enrolled in a Forestry, Ecological or Environmental related program, and who have been a member, leader or volunteer for a not-for-profit youth program.
*Scholarships will be awarded each September. Information on the 2015 Scholarship Awards will be posted on the main Scholarship page in spring 2015.
